What Your Dog’s Coat Says About Their Health

We all want our dogs to look and feel their best and while a wagging tail is a great sign, their coat is one of the biggest clues to their overall health.

Whether you’ve got a sleek short-haired Lab or a floofy German Shepherd, changes in their coat can be your first hint that something’s off. Let’s break down what your dog’s fur might be trying to tell you 🐶👇

A Healthy Dog Coat Looks Like:

  • Shiny or glossy (even in thick coats)

  • Soft to the touch

  • Free of flakes, redness, or irritation

  • Moderate, natural shedding (not extreme)

If your pup’s fur ticks all these boxes, you’re doing great. But if it’s looking a little dry, dull or flaky, it might be time to rethink their grooming (and maybe even diet).

What A Dull or Greasy Coat Could Mean

Here are some common signs of an unhealthy coat and what they could be signalling:

🟤 Dry, brittle fur – Could indicate a lack of fatty acids, poor-quality food, or too much bathing with harsh shampoo.

Dandruff or flaky skin – Often caused by dry skin, allergies, or lack of grooming. Can also flare up in winter when indoor heating dries everything out.

🔴 Bald patches or excessive shedding – Could be allergies, parasites, or simply an overdue deshedding session. If in doubt, check with your vet.

🟠 Greasy or sticky coat – May suggest overactive oil glands, poor shampoo use, or not brushing enough to distribute natural oils.

The Grooming Fix: Brush, Bathe, Repeat

The good news? Most coat issues can be massively improved with a proper grooming routine.

Here’s your 3-step plan using Groomi tools:

✅ 1. Deshed with the Groomi Brush

Dead fur can trap dirt, oil, and dander making the coat look dull. The Groomi removes up to 95% of that dead undercoat, without cutting or tugging. Just smooth, easy grooming.

It also helps stimulate blood flow and spreads natural oils for a glossier coat.

✅ 2. Use Nourishing Dog Shampoo

Many shampoos strip your dog’s skin of essential oils. Ours are vegan, gentle, and smell like dessert (hi, candy floss and apple pie!).

They support skin health while leaving fur clean, soft, and hydrated with no flakes and no itching.

Pro tip: Apply using the Groominator for a deep clean that feels like a massage.

✅ 3. Brush Between Baths

Even if you’re not dealing with shedding, brushing 2–3x a week helps:

  • Distribute oils

  • Prevent matting

  • Keep your dog’s coat healthy between washes

It also keeps fur off your furniture, which we can all agree is a major win.

When to Talk to a Vet

Grooming helps with most coat problems but if your dog’s shedding suddenly increases, they develop bald patches, or their skin looks inflamed or infected, it’s worth a trip to the vet to rule out underlying issues.
