Top Tips for running with your Dog

Many owners agree that dogs are the perfect running partners, they always love to go out and can keep pace without complaining about being tired. Not all dogs are built for running though, the ideal jogging companion is obedient, with lots of energy and endurance.

Most dogs love to run, some more than others, and over different distances and speeds. Breeds such as huskies and greyhounds, were bred to run and most working dogs are naturally suited to running. Dogs with short muzzles, such as pugs and bulldogs tend to overheat and may not be as suitable to run with

It’s important to keep in mind that every dog has their own personality and some take to running easier than others. You should visit the vet for a physical check-up to ensure that running is safe for your dog before you start.

  1. Master loose leash walking before setting out on a run, your dog pulling on the lead can be dangerous when running.
  2. Start at a comfortable place where you can easily communicate with your dog. When you’re out for a walk, have a cue, such as “let’s run,” that tells your dog it’s time to speed up.
  3. Begin by doing 2-3 miles up to 4 times a week. Once you have a couple of weeks of running with your dog at an easy pace add half a mile or 10 minutes to your running if you want to build this up.
  4. Make sure your dog has frequent breaks to go the toilet or have a sniff around and enjoy their surroundings – make it fun for them!
  5. Be mindful of weather conditions, do not take your four-legged friend out in extreme heat or on frozen icy pavements. You can research your dog’s breed as some prefer running warmer or colder temperatures.
  6. Always carry water for your dog when out running.
  7. Have at least one (possibly two) days of rest for both you and your dog between runs.
  8. If you are finding it difficult to get your dog accustomed to running with you dog running programmes are available. Professionals know how to get your dog acquainted with the sport.
  9. Always stop and pick up your dog’s mess. The runners who follow in your path will thank you!

It’s always a great idea to finish your run with your dog by giving lots of praise and attention and of course treating them to a lovely brush over with Groomi. Our comb will help to remove any dead hair and dirt that is stuck in your dog’s undercoat keeping them looking healthy and clean.
